Uncertain time…

Delayed post
Sensex (13635): Intermediate trend: Sideways: Since 1st week of July we anticipated a corrective rally in the markets, provided the Sensex doesn’t break 12.8-12.6k on the downside. On the upside the targets were placed at 14.5k or even 15.3k for the pull back rally, refer to review dated 1July 08, while explaining “Head and Shoulder” bearish pattern. As anticipated, the Sensex rallied from 12575 to 15130 within flat 6 days and touched 15130; but almost kissed the neckline of the Head and Shoulder pattern before turning ‘red’ once again (See Weekly Chart). ‘Smart money’ bought stocks near 12.8-13k levels; while “street” bought the same almost at 14.6k & above, albeit in euphoria; on 23rd July, the mood on the street was as if there is no tomorrow to buy the stocks. The subsequent fall was obvious after such ‘emotional’ buying by the “weaker hands”. Technically, the rally halted exactly at 50% retracement level (15127) of the entire fall from 17735-12575. Further, the bulls were caught in a bad situation with formation of a potently “island” reversal bearish pattern (See daily chart). The sharp rebound from 12.6k levels indicates a waning interest of the bears, at least in the medium term; but this island reversal pattern that too at 50% correction levels (typical bear market phenomena) has once again raised serious doubt about sustainability of the rally. Expect fierce battle between bulls (strong defense at 13-13.5k) & bears (gap area of island reversal i.e.14608-14484) in the next few days or even in weeks. Position your trades accordingly.

Positive Bias...

Dow Jones (11496) Intermediate trend: Sideways (stop 11049)
It was said “Watch 11230 for recovery; if done, then expect a corrective rally upto 11434-11556; else down move towards medium term target of 10660”. The Dow achieved 10827 as against our long standing target of 10.7-10.6k; On Wednesday it closed at 11239, i.e. just above our “threshold” reversal level, resulting a massive counter attack by the bulls, & pushed the index to the weeks high of 11510, almost exactly within our upside target levels. With this wild up move the ‘balance of power’ has tilted in favor of the bulls, at least for the medium term. However in the extreme near term the Index is vulnerable for bearish attack if failed to protect 11544 on close basis. In short, huge volatile swings are expected in the trading range of 11.5k to 11k before start of corrective rally in the region of 11890-11900.

13150-13185 crucial…

Nikkei (12803): Intermediate trend: Bearish In the previous review we said” a close above 13139-150 is must, to start a corrective up move; if the bulls succeed then expect corrective rally towards 13508 or maximum 13605; else, a slow and steady down move towards target objective of 12754-12550”. On the very next day (14th July), the index jumped to 13185 but failed to post close above our proprietary levels of 13139-13150; subsequently fallen to 12671 i.e. well within the target area. The structure is still bearish, despite of last 2 days trading outside the falling parallel. A close above 13070 will give much required strength to the bulls to surpass the ‘key reversal’ points at 13150-13185; if done then (only) expect a corrective rally towards 13.5/13.6k levels. Else expect 12590-12430 in the near term.

Recovery attempts..

SSEC (Shanghai) (2778): Intermediate trend: Sideways (Stop 2566) In the previous review we said “Expect continuation of the corrective uptrend, if able closed above 2955, towards 3200 area; else, range trading in 2850-2700”.
Index failed to surpass the ‘crucial’ level of 2955 and subsequently dipped to 2658 levels, but equally, averted falling below the ‘absolute’ low of 2566(3rd July), before mild recovery in the last trading session. I am continued to hold my “pending rally” view on the index, as mentioned earlier. The level of 2955 is still important for key reversal, oce surpassed; target is 3200-3215 in the near term.

Buy on sharp cuts for corrective rally…

Delayed Post
Sensex (13635): Intermediate trend: Sideways: Stop: 12835(cl) Last Week’s Highlights Our Comments: The trend is bearish & the Sensex is heading towards 12.8 to 12.4k levels. Intermediate trend of the Dow is bearish and likely to continue till 10660; but if closed above 11230 then expect a corrective rally upto 11434/11556. The Nikkei is heading towards target objective of 12754-12550. For the SSEC, close above 2955 is must for recovery, else range trading between 2850-2700. Actual Movements: The Sensex, indeed, fallen sharply to a new low (2008) of 12514 which was almost near to the target. The Dow tested 10827 i.e. close to the target area and bounced back above 11230 confirming corrective rally. The Nikkei tested 12671 thereby achieving our initial target of 12754. SSEC failed to surpass 2955 and continued its sideways trading. Current Week Previewed Highlight: The down trend is halted in case of Sensex/Dow/SSEC. Expect corrective rallies towards 14197/11890 & 3200 in the near future. At the same time volatile and sharp cuts are not ruled out in the extreme near term, but such downswings could be an opportunity to form longs rather than short positions. The Nikkei has to trade above 13150-13185 for a corrective rally. Detail analysis: The Sensex had bounced back from near to our target area of 12.4k. The sharp recovery (that to) from the technically important area could be an indication of the revival of the trend, at least in the medium term. The recent fall from 17735 had consumed 10 weeks. Being corrective rally to that fall, the current rally could last more than 10 weeks As such the recovery could be “slow” & “complex” affair rather than a straight upward rally. See chart for earlier corrective phases, the corrective rallies were consumed more time than the time taken for the corresponding down moves. As such buying on sharp cuts rather than sharp rallies would be a more profitable strategy in the near future. In the immediate short term close above 13750 is must to continue the bullish momentum of the last 2 trading sessions. If failed to surpass 13750(close), immediately, expect a retest of 13k levels once again & that could be an idle opportunity for the bulls to form long positions. On the upside, the Sensex has to clear previous hurdle (Gap down) area of 14127-14197 and then 14520 for sustainable rally in the near future. In short, after taking hit of over 29% since May 08(17735), the Sensex has stabilized near 12.5-12.8k area. Our proprietary tools suggest continuation of the fall from current level is unlikely & market is ripe for corrective rally. We have already witnessed bullish action, as a part of corrective structure, in the last 2 trading sessions. Position your trades accordingly.

Commodity Bulls are in Trouble..???

Dow Jones Commodity Index: ($224.21)
Two weeks back, the rally halted near $238 area with "hangman" bearish pattern. Thus far, the index lost $14 i.e. over 5% & fallen to $224. Is it bulls market is wanning in commodities? It is premature to say so. Trading below $223-$220 levels will weaken the structure further, at least in near term. On the upside $232-$234 is the 'lifeline' for the bulls.

Failed to surpass 14197…

(Delayed post)
Sensex (13469): Intermediate trend: Bearish Last Week’s Highlights: Our Comments: For the Sensex, “trend” is bearish and is heading towards our next target of 12316(advised on 17th June); on the upside 14127-14197 is a new hurdle area; (only) a close above this will lead to “pullback” rally upto 15.3k (maximum). Intermediate trend of the Dow is bearish and likely to continue till 11125-11050 seen. The Brazil Bovespa is likely to fall into bearish trend as weakening structure has emerged; immediate target is placed at 60900. For the FTSE, possibility of retesting of Jan 08 low of 5338 is bright. Actual Movements: After hitting 12.8k, the Sensex made efforts to bounce back (ref:-alert buy at 13094) but could achieve only 14066 as against threshold level of 14127-14197, thereby, maintaining weak structure. The Dow has achieved our target of 11050 almost exactly. The Bovespa index crashed to 57945 as against the target of 60900. As expected, the FTSE slipped below Jan 08 low of 5338. Current Week Previewed Highlight: The trend (Sensex/Dow/Nikkei/SSEC) is bearish. If supported near 12.8-13k or managed to close above 13690, expect a corrective up move. On the downside, retest of recent low of 12820 is the immediate objectives of the bears. The Dow is likely to continue its downtrend unless seen close above 11230. The Nikkei has to trade above 13139-150 for a corrective rally. Shanghai SSEC index is attempting a recovery but ‘close’ above 2955 is prerequisite. In the alert note (4th July -13094) I said” the huge volatility and sharp swings indicates a short term reversal is on the cards.” Consequently, we witnessed a swift move towards 14066 i.e. rally of almost 1000 points when (due to negative “news flow) the ‘street’ expectations were otherwise. Interestingly the corrective uptrend exhausted near to the “technical” hurdle levels of 14127-14197. Friday’s sharp reversal from technically important territory has once again reaffirmed the prevailing structural weakness in the market. The same is likely to continue or even aggravated once the Sensex dips below 12820-12600 area. In the last 48 trading sessions, the Sensex had lost over 4900 points i.e. 27.7% (from 17735 to 12822). The initial leg of the bearish trend, i.e. 21206 to 15332 (Jan 08), was also exactly 27.7%. However, after this initial fall(in Jan 08), the bulls made several attempts to regain the control and the Sensex witnessed corrective rally towards 18k+ levels(Feb 08), before resuming fresh down trend. Now, once again the Sensex had shaved off exactly 27.7%, is it a time for corrective rally? May be! But for this the bulls need to accomplish difficult conditions such as a) Not to fall much below 12.8k levels; & b) Close above 13670-690 area. If succeeds, then expect a “time” consuming up move towards initial hurdle of 14127-14197, then 14520-14645. Else, the continuation of a swift down move towards 12.8 to 12.4k in the next few trading sessions. Position your trades accordingly.

Shanghai...making recovery attempts..

SSEC (Shanghai) (2856): In recovery mode… Intermediate trend: Bearish
In the previous review (24 June: Value 2831) I said” the reversal in the bearish trend is unlikely; for the extreme short term trend a close above 2945-2955 is must(difficult), if done, expect trading bounce towards 3200 region”. Since then, the SSEC index had dipped to 2566 and in recovery efforts seen thereafter, on 10th July, it achieved a high of 2952 i.e. barely 3 points away from our resistance level of 2955. The index has seen some positive efforts in the last 6 trading sessions and also recovered from the lower “equidistance” parallel channel. Expect continuation of the corrective uptrend, if able closed above 2955, towards 3200 area. Else, range trading in 2850-2700.

Nikkei...Down move intact...

Nikkei (13039): Down move intact… Intermediate trend: Bearish
In the previous review (24 June: Value 13857) I said” the bulls are loosing control over the market after a sharp rally of over 23% since March 08 lows. On the downside expect a fall upto 128 Index achieved 12918 in the last trading session, i.e. just short of our target. In the extreme short term, a close above 13139-150 is must, to start a corrective up move, i.e. break about the falling parallel channel. If the bulls succeed then expect corrective rally towards 13508 or maximum 13605. Else, a slow and steady down move towards target objective of 12754-12550.

Dow..watch 11230 for recovery....

Dow Jones (11100): Watch 11230…for recovery Intermediate trend: Bearish
It was said “A new, steeper, falling channel (marked in blue) indicates continuation in directional downtrend unless 11125-11050 seen On the upside, a close above 11556 could 'halt' the downtrend; as far as intermediate trend is concerned, retest of July 2006 low i.e. 10660 looks imminent”. The Dow achieved 10977 as against 11050, without making any efforts to capture 11556. The recovery seen from the low of 10977 could turned out be an “emotional” recovery from psychological level of 11k, if failed to post close above 11230 (value of the upper trend line of the channel, for Monday). If done, expect a corrective, “time” consuming rally upto 11434-11556. Failure will lead to continuation of the downtrend towards our medium term target objective of 10660.

Alert....12.8k is a support! (delayed post)

Sensex: 13094
Our Last Comments: The trend remains bearish. The Sensex is heading towards our next price target of 12316(advised on 17th June). On the upside 14127-14197 will be a new hurdle area; if closed above 14197 then (only) expect a ‘pullback’ rally, towards 15.3k region (maximum).
Mid-Alert: The Sensex made furious movements in the last 2 trading sessions, amidst huge volatility and sharp swings. Technically, such environment is always witnessed near "crucial" turns. Further, the day when Sensex rebounded with 700+ points (on Wednesday), the days volume (BSE) was "highest" since the near trading history (at least from year 2006 onwards). Ideally, the ending point (bullish / bearish) of the trend (minor/major) is invariably associated with heighten volatility, wild moves & bloodiest battles for control (over the markets, by strong hands).
In short, this ‘unusual" action indicates a pending reversal in the trend, at least minor trend (for short term) in the near future. Expect benign up move if 12820-12600 remains protected (on closing basis).

July 1, 2008

Weakness Emerging....

Brazil Bovespa (65017) Intermediate trend: Bearish
Before moving towards an all time high of 73920, the index had witnessed a strong resistance near 66800-65800 region; which ideally should have been acted as a strong support zone in subsequent corrective down moves. However, the index has broken this crucial area, downward, thereby weakening overall bullish structure. At present its making efforts to regain control, however, a close above 66800-67000 is must. If failed, then slow and steady downtrend will open towards 60900-61000 region.

Fear Factor...

Sensex:(13461) Intermediate trend: Bearish
Last Week’s Highlights July 01, 2008 Our Comments: Intermediate trend is down; break below 15.3k is a major shift in Indian equities & will act as a major "hurdle" for the bulls; in the near term if closed above 14510 then (only) expect trading bounce; on the downside target objective remains same i.e.13770(advised on 17th June). Intermediate trend of Dow/Nikkei & SSE is bearish; 11550 (Dow), 13620 & then 12858 (Nikkei) & 2250 (Shanghai) are the near term price objectives. Actual Movements: The Sensex made efforts to take 14510, but failed & could achieve only 14449.8 on the day of expiry. However, it achieved the target of 13770 and continued to slide further. The Dow achieved & surpassed 11550. The Nikkei had broken the crucial level of 13620, & now heading for second target; The SSE remained weak and inching towards target of 2250. Current Week Previewed Highlight: The trend remains bearish. The Sensex is heading towards our next price target of 12316(advised on 17th June). On the upside 14127-14197 will be a new hurdle area; if closed above 14197 then (only) expect a ‘pullback’ rally, towards 15.3k region (maximum). The Dow is likely to continue its downtrend unless 11125-11050 seen; for corrective rally close above ‘11556’ is must. Brazil (Bovespa) index - Weakening structure is emerging. UK FTSE- 5694-5715 is the hurdle area for bulls. Last week, on the daily charts, the Sensex made few positive attempts to recover, near the lower end of the parallel channel, but failed to achieve 14510 for sustained recovery. Adding insult to the injury, yesterday's price action has breached the parallel channel downwards, which could aggravate the "fear" factor, further. On 27th June (Friday) the Sensex created, yet another, "falling gap" near 14197-14127 area, thereby creating a new 'hurdle' area in the near term. If managed to fill up this gap completely (close above 14197), then (only) expect a corrective rally. On the Weekly charts, suspected Head & Shoulder bearish reversal pattern, is now became reality. On the downside expect 12316. After an initial break, throwback action (pullback) is expected. However 14197, as discussed earlier, is the key point for such corrective rally. If happened, then expect 14519 or even retest of 15.3k in the medium term, within the overall bearish structure. See yearly chart. The Sensex is trading below the 'open' of the year 2007, i.e. completely eroding last year’s gains. Baring the fall in the year 1995, where the Sensex had completely wiped out the gains made in the year 1994, the Sensex had never fallen with similar magnitude. The bad news is not ended here; after 1995 fall, the Sensex witnessed prolong sideways movements before attempting a new high. If the current situation unfolds (we are just half way in the year 2008) in a somewhat similar (to the previous one) fashion, then the dream of a new high for the Sensex will be a time consuming affair (large trading swings).

FTSE...retest of Jan low....?

FTSE (5625) Intermediate trend: Bearish FTSE has ended the corrective up move at 6377 and started a fresh downtrend. However, after achieving 5470 it has witnessed a sharp rebound at current level. I suspect this recovery is a part of overall bearish structure and not a fresh up move. The rise beyond 5690-5710 area looks doubtful. If failed to surpass these levels, possibility of retesting of Jan 08 low of 5338 is bright.

Dow....heading for 10.6K (Delayed post)

Dow Jones (11350) Intermediate trend: Bearish It was said” the Dow has retraced the previous leg (11700-13200) in faster time, confirming (2nd stage) the larger degree weakness; near term target is placed at 11640 & 11550.
The Dow surpassed the target while breaching previous low of 11508(Jan08). The falling parallel channel (dotted line), drawn from recent high (May08) has broken downward. A new, steeper, falling channel (marked in blue) indicates continuation in directional downtrend unless 11125-11050 seen. On the upside, a close above 11556 could 'halt' the downtrend; and will lead to consolidation with corrective up moves towards 11660(minimum)-11928(maximum) region. As far as intermediate trend is concerned, the situation has been aggravated, further, with this new low. Retest of July 2006 low i.e. 10660 looks imminent.

June 24, 2008

Target 12858...

Nikkei (13857) Intermediate trend: Bearish
In the previous report (13th May -13953), I said, expect a continuation of the uptrend till 14390; stop for the bulls is placed at 13620. Since then, the index has managed to float above the stop of 13620(even today) while achieving high of 14601, as against target of 14390.However; the trading is confined to a 'narrow’ range of 13700-14400 for quite some time. Now this standoff is likely to get resolved in the near future, may be in favor of the bears. It seems that the bulls are loosing control over the market after a sharp rise of over 23% since Mar lows. The weakness is also evident from the faster retracement of the last segment (13810-14469)-see chart. The upside is caped at 14300; while on the downside 13620 will be crucial, once broken, expect 12858.

Heading for 2250-2200....?

Shanghai (2831) Intermediate trend: Bearish
The index has reversed the trend with classic “Head & shoulder” reversal pattern (monthly charts), and lost over 56% since Oct 07. The reversal in the trend is unlikely in the near future, and it may drift towards a "possible" stoppage area of 2250-2200 i.e. previous significant top achieved in June 2001. For the extreme short term trend, a close above 2945-55 is must, if done (difficult task); expect a trading bounce towards 3200 region.

Global markets....weakness persistant...(Delayed post)

Dow Jones (11842) Intermediate trend: Bearish
In the previous review (Dow was at 12307), I said (previous review)"the intermediate trend is down; the trading is still confined to falling parallel channel; as long as it trades below 12370 the downtrend will persist and will retest the 12k levels. Dow made a low of 11819.So far the falling channel is intact, resultant continuation of the downtrend. Now revise stop to 12085(close) from earlier 12370;if seen, expect a spike(corrective) towards 12200-12250 region. From the medium term perspective, the Dow has already given "faster retracement" of the previous intermediate uptrend (11700 to 13200) on weekly "close" charts. This is a second stage confirmation of a larger degree weakness. First stage confirmation was failure to close above 13.2k (see past reports). On the downside, our near term target is placed at 11640-11550.

Sensex....Change of Polarity .....(Delayed post)

Last Week’s Highlights
Our Comments: Significant top (long term) has been created at 17335 (roof); Intermediate trend is also down; the corrective rally (within the intermediate downtrend) is like to make attempts for recovery, if the Sensex sustains above 15553, towards a target objectives of 15770 or 15950. On the downside 14300-14500 area is likely to act “last resort” for the bulls, if broken; target is 13779 or even 12316. Actual Movements: The Sensex made initial efforts for recovery and achieved 15770 (actual high 15789 lasted from a minute after strong opening on 18th June 08) i.e. exactly on our target and tanked huge 1632 points (10.34%) in just 4 trading sessions. Current Week Previewed Highlight: The long term trend remains bearish (major top at 17735) and recovery in near future is likely to be a trading opportunity rather than investment. Intermediate trend is also bearish; however, the bulls are likely to get some breather if the Sensex is able to close/trade above 14510. Then expect a corrective rally till 14750-14890. On the downside, immediate target for the bears remains same i.e. 13770. The ongoing “rout” in Indian market is not an exceptional event; but it is a part of “global equity meltdown”. Read about Dow, Nikkei & SSE …...all are sailing in the same boat, only gravity of the fall is different.
Sensex (14293) Intermediate trend: Bearish
The faster retracement of previous really (14677-17735) has given its implications with a drastic fall below the crucial trend deciding zone of 15332, decisively. Since the beginning of the bearish trend in Jan 08, we had witnessed sharp rallies from this level; now it will act as a “major” hurdle for the bulls, due to change of polarity concept. (Support turning into resistance). As discussed in previous reviews (5th & 25th March), since 2003 (start of the bullish trend) the Sensex has observed “May-bottom” cycle with 30-32% fall occurring at every alternate year (2004 & 2006). In the present fall, the Sensex has broken this phenomenon, resultant a “structural” change after a strong bulls run from May 03-Jan08 of over 18k points rally. For the intermediate trend, the recent “break away” gap at 15789-15259 will be a major hurdle for the bulls. Previous (such) gaps created on 16th Jan 08 (20203-20079) & on 6th Feb 08 (18509-18274) remains “uncovered”, even today. Hence, considering the overall weakness in the trend, this recent falling gap will be a “major” hurdle for the bulls. In short, till 15789 seen (difficult task), the intermediate trend will remain bearish. For the near term, the Sensex may give trading bounce if “close above 14510”. This behavior will be in line with usual tendency of markets to do “least expected” moves (i.e. contra moves to that of popular perception). If it does gives a rally (corrective) then expect a rise up to 14750 or 14890. As a matter of principle, technical analyst studies/reveals the “effects” of price movements, while “fundamental” analyst goes for “causes” of the price movements. The answers for “why (i.e. causes) could be many and will be deceptive or ambiguous; but the answer for “what” (i.e. effects) will be precise and tradeable. It’s all started with “sub-prime”, then “derivative trades, then “inflation” and now “political uncertainty”; after few thousand points fall, the reason would differ, almost certainly.

Bulls making attempts to regain control…

Sensex: Last Week’s Highlights Our Comments: The reasons for positive bias on the markets, in the near term, despite of strong bearish sentiments are: a) The Sensex has formed bullish hammer pattern which indicates a rejection at lower levels, b) After a consistent fall the Sensex has created a huge ‘falling gap’ at 15526-15202 area, but we suspect this gap could turn out to be an ‘exhaustion” gap i.e. end in the minor trend, c) Our proprietary tools indicates a short term recovery if the Sensex “closes” above 15202. As such expect a bounce till 15526 i.e. an attempt to ‘fill” up the falling gap. If sustain above this then only we can expect a meaningful recovery towards confirmation of ‘e’ wave. For the medium term trend, the Sensex should not fall much below 14677 or say 14500. Once its start trading below 14.5k, the more serious downtrend will open towards next target objective of 13779 and then 12316. Actual Movements: The Sensex created a new low at 14645, slightly below the previous low of 14677, and recovered, as expected, on the “fundamentally” adverse news. Yesterday it has created a high 15553, as against our expectation of 15526. Current Week Previewed Highlight: In the near term, the bulls are likely to continue their recovery attempts. Watch 15553 on the upside, if sustained then expect 15770-15950 in the next few trading sessions. Else, range trading between 15500-15180 area. Overall, the large degree weakness persists and as of now the market is in a trading range. Detail Analysis:
The Sensex has failed to defend the (previous) panic low of 14677 (18th March) and created a new low. Further, it has also completely retraced the previous rally from 14677to 17735 in a faster time; as against 29 trading sessions for rise, the new low has been created in 25 trading days. By rule, faster retracement indicates a significant top has been created at 17735. The larger degree uptrend is ruled out till this level is surpassed. On the daily charts, the Sensex has exactly bounced back from the lower end of the parallel channel (see chart) and seen recovery attempts by the bulls. Near the lower end of the channel the “street” was nervous and seldom thought of recovery, but it happened, as the market has a penchant of making deceptive moves. Since then, in a corrective up move, so far, the Sensex has gained over 900 points. There could be further positive attempt by the bulls but for that the Sensex needs to close & sustained above 15553, i.e. yesterday’s high. If it does, then expect continuation of the corrective rally till 15770-15950 seen. If it fails to sustain above 15553, then expect a range trading in 15500-15180 area for a while before deciding future course of action. For the long term trend, as discussed in the above Para, 17735 is a ‘roof’. On the downside 14300-14500 area is likely to act as a ‘last resort’ for the bulls. If the Sensex drops below 14260, the possibility of extracting triangle will be ruled out and further downside will be opened, towards the target objective of 13779 or even 12316. Trade accordingly.

12370-Critical resistance!

Dow Jones (12307) Intermediate trend: Bearish In the previous review (Dow was at 12876) on 13th May, I said “The Dow has touched 13191 as against our target of 13200 & once again fallen back in a trading range of 12700-13000; Is it an end of the corrective rally started from Mar low? The answer lies in breaking of resistance zone of 13190-13220, if failed to do so, the downside till 12200-12050 looks certain”. Within the next 4 trading sessions, more precisely on 19th May, the Dow had attempted to break the resistance zone of 13190-13200. However, it could achieved only 13137 and given up. Since then it has moved down, slowly and steadily, and seen 12029 on 11th June 2008; exactly on our target i.e. 12050. Near term view: At present, the trading is still confined to falling channel. (See chart). As long as the Dow is trading below 12370, highest value of the channel, the current downtrend will persist, may be retest of 12k is possible. If broken above 12370, expect recovery efforts till 12602.

Sensex on the brink...

Major Indices : Sensex : 15066 Nifty : 4500 Intermediate Trend: Bearish – Stop 16632 Key Technical Levels : 15970- on the upside, 14846- on the downside Target achieved: It was said – in the previous review- “markets are likely to continue the downtrend started from 17.7k till 15.3k is achieved; it could be a last down move of the fall started from 21206; it’s difficult to anticipate weakness below 15.3k levels; if it happens the situation will be aggravated further & it will be another indication that “all the negatives” are not yet factored into the price; on the upside close above 16626 is must for revival”. The Sensex achieved 15.3k but it went below the threshold to 14846, i.e. just 165 points away from the low achieved on 18th Mar 08. This action, i.e. not breaching the previous low of 14677, despite of absolute bearish grip, has added more confusion in already timid situation. Is it really a last down move? Although the Sensex has averted the situation of a new low, as of now, and recover more than 1.5% from the intraday low, it needs to be bounce back above 15812-15976 area, quickly , to confirm the “presence” of the bulls (strong hands), if not a automatic reversal in the trend. The reasons for this positive bias on the markets, in the near term (short term), despite of strong bearish sentiments are i) Sensex formed bullish “hammer” pattern on the Candlestick chart, suggests “rejection” at lower levels; however it need to trade above 15000 levels consistently to have bullish implication of this pattern. But failure to do so will open further downside. ii)Falling “gap” created (yesterday) in the area of 15526-15502; such a huge gap down price action that too after a consistent fall (from 17.7k) might turned out to be a “exhaustion” gap i.e. end in the previous minor trend. Hence the bulls must attempt to close this gap on close basis i.e. a close above 15526. iii) Our proprietary tools indicates a recovery (may be short term) in the Sensex once it “closes” above the 15202 i.e. yesterday’s high. As far as the long term structure of the market is concern, here are the key technical observations which suggest “it’s not all over”, yet, for the bulls. a) We suspect a Contracting triangle formation on the charts beginning 21206. Triangle is a 5 wave pattern- 3 legs in the direction of the trend & 2 legs in opposite directional of the trend. See the chart. Accordingly we are likely to be in the last wave i.e. “e” wave. First down move “a” (from 21206-15332) was of 5866 points; the second down move “c” was of 3450 points (from 18137-14677) and the current move “e” has so far consumed 2883 points. This reduction in the magnitude of the fall in each leg (5866-3450- 2883) indicates a contraction/loss of power. However “e” leg, if not ended near 14677, should not fall below 14260 to maintain the fall less than 3450 points. On the upside, the Sensex needs to cross the b-d line (present value near about 17.5k) to confirm the positive attempts in the direction of an upward breakout. b) On the monthly chart, the Sensex had invariably taken the support at previous “high” of each intermediate up move. See the monthly chart. The previous high (Feb 2007) is at 14723. Since the Jan 08 low, the Sensex has averted the fall below this level, thereby maintaining the long term bullish structure. c) As discussed earlier (ref 25th March report on the Sensex), sharp cuts of 30-32% on the Sensex, every alternate year, is a common phenomena, so far since the beginning of the present bull run in 2003. As long as Sensex maintain itself above, say, 14500 area, the bullish structure is maintained. Conclusion: As anticipated, 3 weeks back, the Sensex has achieved our target (down) of 15.3. But a close below this threshold level has raised several doubts for the “reversal” in the bearish trend started from 21206. We will continue to hold out cash positions till the Sensex gives confirm bullish reversal. A close above yesterday’s high of 15202 will be the first indication of a short term recovery. If the bulls able to “fill” up the gap down area of 15526, we can expect a meaningful recovery towards a confirmation of “e” wave. Bearish Scenario: If the Sensex continues its downtrend even below the yesterday’s low, then the recovery is least expected. In such case expect a dip up to previous low of 14677 or even 14500 in a next few trading sessions. Once the Sensex starts trading below 14500, the more serious downside, price wise as well as time wise, will be opened and the next immediate target will be 13779 and then 12316 (Feb 07 low). All the major sector indices are trading below their respective lows of Mar 08, indicating a gravity of the situation. On the stock specific front the situation is worse and almost all the leading stocks in Banking, Capital Goods, Reality, Power sectors are trading almost 60% down from their Jan 08 levels. Failure to move quickly above 15.8-16k levels in the near term, or even by month end (which is also a quarter end), may severely damage/alter the long term equitation’s on the monthly/quarterly charts. In such a case, I suspect a Head and Shoulder bearish reversal pattern will emerge which would lead to a fall even below 10k in the Sensex in the next 3-4 quarters. However, even if this scenario unfolds, the Sensex is unlikely to fall in a straight line. It may provide number of short term rallies thereby giving ample opportunities to trade. Position your trading/investment positions accordingly. Overall, the bulls are on the verge of collapse, after a spectacular rise from 2900 in May 03. There could be a bitter battle between the bulls and the bears, in the next few trading sessions, simply for the survival. It is very unlikely that such a major shift (on the either side) will happen so easily. Actions of the strong hands (institutions/ informed big players) will be crucial for deciding the direction/trend of the market. As such, smaller hands can keep themselves away from the markets till the things get resolved. Aggressive investment buying (trading is permitted) just because of 60% fall in the value will be a trap if the Sensex falls into the next bearish cycle. Remember, the price discounts “everything” well in advance, as such the worst “fundamental” news/shocks will be an excellent opportunity for the long term “base/bottom” formations, but when it will happen is the million dollar question.

Last down move..?

Major Indices: Sensex : 16063 Nifty : 4739 Intermediate Trend: Bearish – Stop 17212 Key Technical Levels: 16626- on the upside; 15848- on the downside It was said – in the previous review- “Bears are in control of the market; as long as the Sensex is trading below the recent falling gap area of 16626, the recovery or even short term bounce is ruled out; if failed then fall up to 15850 or 15300, in next couple of weeks looks imminent”. The bulls tried to fight back and posted a high of 16666 for the Sensex, as against the falling gap (highest point) area of 16626, but failed to protect the territory with a “close” above 16626, thereby losing over 670 points in the last 3 trading sessions. After yesterday's sharp cut, the bears had successfully dented the strong support area of 16000-16200. In the process the Sensex has also closed below the falling parallel channel, confirming the weakening structure. On the downside, we expect, the Sensex should settle down near about 15300 region, at least in the near term. As of now it’s difficult to anticipate the weakness below 15300 region. However, if it happens, then the situation will be aggravated further. Market discount ‘everything’ well in advance; as such in this current slide from 21k+ level, it must have discounted many economical, political & many other factors, already. But if market slide down even below the 15.3 -15k level, it will be a great concern and another indication that “all the negatives” are not yet factored (discounted) in the price. Overall, we are of the view that, the daily as well as weekly charts confirms the continuation of the down trend started from recent high of 17.7k, with a near term price objectives of 15.3k. On the upside firm trading & close above 16626 will be the first sign of bullish revival (not a trend reversal). Position your trades accordingly

Weakness Persistant

Major Indices : Sensex : 16275 : Nifty : 4859 Intermediate Trend: Bearish – Stop 17413 Key Technical Levels: 16626- on the upside: 15848- on the downside In the previous review I said " bulls failed to strengthen their position after 3000 points rally; this lack of commitments at crucial points indicates a larger degree falls in the next couple of weeks; this argument will loose value only if the Sensex sustains above 17413; On the downside, the last hope (for the bulls) is at 16400-16452 levels”. In the retaliation move, the Sensex achieved 17434 (as against 17413) but lost almost 1200 points for there, proving the anticipated weakness. As of now, the bears are in control of the markets. The bulls are just “hoping” for the best, but failing (repeatedly) to head higher. In this week, the Sensex has created a new resistance level with a falling “Gap” created on Monday, i.e. 16626-16498. The importance of such “Gaps” is immense as far as deciding medium term trend of the market. Look at the earlier falling “Gap” scenarios on the chart (since the top of 21k); these gaps remained “unfilled” and so the persistent weakness. Today it has made an attempt to “fill” the gap, but failed. As long as the Sensex trades below this recent falling gap area of 16626 (highest point of the gap), the recovery or even short term bounce is ruled out. If the bulls succeed, then expect a rally (corrective) up to 17200+ which is nothing but an upper end of the new falling parallel channel (marked in blue dotted lines), where expect a renewed selling pressure. On the downside fall up to 15850-15300, in the next couple of weeks, looks imminent. Trade accordingly.

Pause...?

Nikkei 225 (13953)
In the last review (16th April) when the Nikkei was trading at 12990, I was stated “after a 15% rise since the recent bottom of 11691, the Nikkei is in a consolidation zone; once the recent high of 13485 surpassed we may expect a continuation of the bullish trend; stop is placed at 12430 for the longs”. As expected, after a brief consolidation, the Nikkei had rose to 4 months high at 14208 (7th May), gaining over 21% since March low. The stop of 12430 remains untouched. In the last week the Index has lost 4% from the week’s high of 14208, but recovered smartly in the previous 2 trading sessions, from the low of 13540. However, this recovery may turn out to be a short lived if the trend doesn’t sustain above 14050. If it does, then expect a continuation of the uptrend towards a target area of 14220 - 14390, else the Index may fall into a sideways trading zone of 13620-14050 for the next couple of trading sessions, before deciding future course of action. Revise stop from 12430 to 13620.

Trend exhaustion…?

Dow Jones (12876)
It was said (in the review dated 28th April- value 12891) “the Dow is trading near sensitive area of 11900, if sustain we can see a continuation of the rally towards a target of 13200, else watch 12604 for negative clues”. In reality, after 5 trading session from the review date, the Dow has touched 13191, as against target of 13200, and now once again fallen back in a important trading range of 12700-13100. So far, the bulls gained 14% from the recent trough of 11508 (Jan 08, when the overall sentiments were sharply negative). Now the question is “is it an end of the corrective rally within the overall bear market? Or the Dow has discounted the bad news and likely to continue its upward march?” The answer lies in breaking the resistance zone of 13190-13320, i.e. a 0.618% retracement level of the entire fall from the recent high (14279). Failure to post a weekly close above 13320 will increase the possibility of bearish scenario. On the downside 12648 is the stop for the bulls, if broken, a fall towards 12200-12050 region looks certain.

Stop broken...Bears sets in...

Major Indices :: Sensex : 16737 : Nifty : 4982 Intermediate Trend: Bearish Key Technical Levels: 17413- on the upside, 16452-16400- on the downside
In the last review I said "the Sensex is resting exactly on the upper end of the parallel channel; technically this is a good opportunity for the bears, if they are in mood to fight back, otherwise it will be free walk for the bulls;trading below 17240, will be a setback for the bulls (may be temporary resting period) and in that case expect a dip up to 16900". In reality, the bulls made an attempt to break this upward channel on a very first trading day of the week, but failed miserably to do so. This failure to sustain above the critical levels had provided fantastic opportunity for the bears to dominate. Subsequently, the stoploss at 17240 was broken, resultant we had witnessed a downswing which went below our target of 16900. This sharp fall has altered the equations for the bulls, both at macro as well as micro levels. After a rally of almost 3000 points (from low of 14677-18th March), bulls failed to strengthen their position. One last hope(for the bulls) is at 16400-16452 level. If failed to protect, the Sensex will be in vulnerable situation. On the upside, trading above 17413 is critical for the bulls, but seems to be a difficult task, as of now. Conclusion: After a 3000 points rally, the bulls failed to strengthen their position. This lack of commitments on the part of the bulls pointing towards a possibility of larger degree fall in the next couple of weeks. This argument will loose some value (not all) if the Sensex surpasses and trades above 17413 in the near term.

Bulls strengthen the grip....

Major Indices :: Sensex : 17600 : Nifty : 5228 Intermediate Trend: Bullish Key Technical Levels: 17810- on the upside, 17240- on the downside After giving a bullish call, exactly at the recent trough (14800), we became little bit skeptical, in the last week, about the continuation of the bullish trend.. We said (in the last review -16739), "bulls achieved our target of 17225 with 17% rise, failure to post monthly close above 16800 could turned out to be a 'Trojan horse' in the bulls camp; Sensex like to hit a roadblock near the upper end of the parallel channel drawn on daily charts; any close below 16781 will trigger the bearish dominance.....(see http://sagetrader.blogspot.com/search/label/Sensex%20Analysis to read all comments the Sensex since 14677). In reality, the Sensex seldom touched our stop loss of 16781 and went above 17k, comfortably, thereby strengthening the positions further. The upside target of 17660 was almost achieved with a high of 17621 in the last trading session. Further, it has also posted a monthly close well above the level of 16800. Considering the "delicate" situation near 17k, we had labeled the intermediate trend as "sideways" from earlier "bullish"; now the trend is re-labeled as "Bullish"; Stop 16585/4950. Interestingly, the week ended with the Sensex resting exactly on the upper end of the parallel channel. Now, technically this is a good opportunity for the bears, if they are in mood to fight back. Otherwise, it will be free walk for the bulls. Near term target 17810-18137. On the downside, trading below 17240, will be a setback for the bulls (may be temporary resting period) and in that case expect a dip up to 16900.

April 28, 2008

Trojan Horse...?

Major Indices :: Sensex : 16739 : Nifty : 5037
Intermediate Trend: Sideways Key Technical Levels: 17271- on the upside, 16781- on the downside In the previous review, when the Sensex was at 16739, we had stated “the uptrend is intact, the Sensex is likely to achieve target of 17020-225 , probably, in this week itself; any close below 16111 will warrant profit booking; those who have invested on our bullish calls near 14833 must have yielded good returns". The Sensex moved as per our expectations and hit our target area of 17225 exactly(actual high 17271). The movements were also confined to the parallel channel drawn on the daily charts. Friday's rally of over 400 points, was good set back for the bears, but suspect a 'manipulative' rise rather than guanine buying interest by the bulls. Is it (rally) going sustain further? I am skeptical. The recent rally could turned out to be a "Trojan horse" in the bulls camp. The reasons for this bearish views are a) The Sensex has already achieved our target with 17% rise in 5 weeks, b) It is (sensex) very close to the upper end of the parallel channel drawn on the daily charts, c) On the monthly charts (see Sensex monthly chart in our report dated 25th March) the Sensex has given a "pull back" rally after a deceive break of the long term support line. The current value of this support line is near about 16800; and one needs a monthly 'close' above 16800 to prove that the rally was not a pull back but a genuine bullish action. Hence it is profitable to play defensive and "take profit" at this stage of the market and avoid any aggression on the bullish front. The benefit of doubt should be given to the bears than bulls. Any close below 16781 will trigger the bear dominance, once again, and in that eventuality a fall (minimum) upto 16100-16220 looks imminent. On the positive note, a close above 17271 i.e. yesterday's high, is critical for the bulls. If done on closing basis, the Sensex can flare upto 17400-17660, i.e. upper end of the parallel channel, where expect selling pressure. On the Global markets, bears may surprise the bulls after a good rise of 12.8% in the Dow Jones, 14.9% in FTSE, 25.7% in HangSeng & 19.6% in Nikkei, since their respective "troughs" in January 2008.

Bulls are in trouble...

Dow Jones (12891)
In the previous review (12825) we had stated “As expected, the Dow had breached a barrier 12800-12840;now expect profit booking if failed to sustain above 12470; else, a slow and time consuming rally towards a target of 13200-13220". The stop of 12470 remained untouched. Equally the trading was confined to a small range of 12600-12950. Apparently the markets look calm and range bound. But a closer look on the charts, specially long term, reveals a worrisome picture. When the Dow was trading near 11900 area, I had stated that, even though the street is extremely bearish, the Dow may not fall in strait line hereafter, and may take good support to the recent low of 11500. Since then it has rallied and posted 12%+ returns since the low of Jan 08. However, right now, the Dow is trading (and struggling to float) near a sensitive zone of 12900-12990, which is also a 50% retracement level of the entire fall from 14278 to 11507. Normally bear market rallies ends near 50% correction levels. Failure to overcome this resistance area (near about at 12990) will provide an excellent comeback opportunity for the bears. Further, on the weekly charts, there is a "Hang Man" formation on the candlestick charts. Which, by definition, is a bearish reversal pattern. On the flip side, a strong close, above this candle formation (a weekly close above 12987) will negate the bearish implication, all together. If it does so, then (only) expect a further rise up to 13200. On the downside watch 12604, a revised stop for the bulls.

April 22, 2008

Target 9200..

BSE Bankex (8580)
The Banking index has suffered a loss of 42% {from the high of 12678 (Jan08) to 7316(Mar08)} in just 45 trading sessions; worst performance vis-à-vis broader markets. Since mid-March, the index has consolidated (5 weeks) and in the process formed a “triangle” formation on the daily charts, which depicts a “accumulation” by the strong hands. Decisive break form the “triangle” suggests a upward thrust, may be up to 9200 in the near term. The sector has already suffered a lot, in a short span. Hence a sharp fall, may be on potential bad news could turned out to be a “good” buying opportunity for the long term bulls, rather than selling. Stop near about 8100.

Setback....

Setback... Major Indices: Sensex : 16739 Nifty : 5037 Intermediate Trend: Bullish – Stop 16111 Key Technical Levels : 17020- on the upside; 16390- on the downside
In the previous review, when the Sensex was at 16153, we had stated “post triangle breakout the control has been shifted in favor of the bulls & the intermediate trend has turned bullish; expect systematic buying instead of ‘euphoria”; near term target 17020 and then 17225”. As perceived, the Sensex has moved up, cautiously. This rise was a complete setback for the bears. The actions were stock specific and the bulls were determined to turn the table. Our near term target of 17020-225 remains unachieved due to truncated weekend. The same will be achieved, probably, in this week itself. Normally, any “trend” ending with a ‘triangle’ formation gives a sharp ‘thrust’ on the opposite direction of the breakout. Here, the thrust is on upside. We have already witnessed a rally of more than 1200 points in the last 5-6 trading sessions. This could be a tip of iceberg, if the bulls successfully defend the level of 16390 in the next few trading sessions. Else, the entire week could see a consolidation between 16600-16190, before deciding further course of action. We remain bullish on the Indian equities for the short term as well as for the medium term; a near term target for the Sensex is placed at 17020-17225. Daily close below 16111 will warrant profit booking with a neutral view (Short term). The action for the week will be more of stock specific and non-index components may witness sharp rebound. Overall, very fertile period for the bulls, especially those who have formed incremental longs since our buy call (partial) at 14833. BSE Bankex (8580) The Banking index has suffered a loss of 42% {from the high of 12678 (Jan08) to 7316(Mar08)} in just 45 trading sessions; worst performance vis-à-vis broader markets.

12800...our target acheived

Dow Jones (12825)
In the previous review (12302) we had stated “even after 300 point fall, our stop of 12164 remains untouched & intermediate trend remained bullish; despite of strong negative sentiments it is (still) trading above 11500 for the last 2 and half months; expect a sideways trading if failed to breach the strong resistance of 12841”. As expected, the Dow had breached a barrier (12800-12840, marked with dotted lines) in the last week. Now expect profit booking if failed to sustain above 12470; else, a slow and time consuming rally towards a target of 13200-13220.

April 16, 2008

Control Shifted....

In the previous review when the Sensex was at 15757, we had stated, “Wounded bulls are in retaliation mode, the odds are in favor of the bulls, expect a fierce battle in the range of 15300-16450 before shifting of the control, decisively”.

Since 28th March, the Sensex was moving in narrow range of 16500-15300 (shake out zone). In this process, it has formed a triangle pattern on the daily charts. (See chart). Yesterday, its has given a upward break out with a strong thrust beyond 16000. As anticipated, now, the control has been shifted in favor of the bulls with Intermediate trend turning bullish. Stop 15655.

When the Sensex was trading at 14677, we were vouching for a bullish trend & advised investors to buy on every sharp decline. The strategy has proved correct & yielded 10% gains, so far. Now expect a continuation of the intermediate uptrend with an initial target of 17020 and then 17225. However, instead of euphoric buying expect a systematic rise with stock specific actions.

Conclusion: After a long & fierce battle, the bulls have taken a control over the market, at least in the near term. As long as 15655 remains protected, the market will be in the hands of bulls. Long term investors may reduce their cash positions in favor of frontline stocks. Expect an initial rise up to 17020 and then 17225 in the next 2-3 weeks.

Nikkei gained 15%

On 18th March, when Nikkei was trading at 11787, we had stated that “While concluding a 13 years bear market (Since 1990-2003), the Nikkei made a low of 7603 in Apr 03. Subsequently it has climbed to the recent high of 18300 (Feb 07) and started its decline. Yesterday, it has made a low of 11691, which is exactly on 0.618% retrenchment of the entire rise from Apr 03 to Feb 07; Technically, 0.618 is the “golden” ratio, and if the fall is arrested, in couple of weeks, near about 11400-600 levels, we may see a revival, at least for the time being, in one of the weakest market in the world” Since then, 11691 remained untouched and Nikkei has moved up to 13485, in a 4 week long rally, before correcting to present levels. A rise of neat 15% in 4 weeks, when the street was beating the “chest” with recession in US, rise in crude prices, global inflationary pressure etc. Further, in the process the Nikkei has also broken (upward) a falling parallel channel, drawn from 17488 (Oct 07) on the weekly charts. A fall below 11691 will unfold a disastrous scenario for the bulls. However, even though its little bit premature to say, the long term charts are pointing towards a bull market in Japan in the near term. As of now, the bulls are in consolidation faze, after a 15% gains. They will regain the control, once surpassed the recent high of 13485, within the next 3-4 weeks. On the downside 12430 is a strong support for the bulls, a close below this will turn the tables in favor of the bears, with probability of re-test of the recent bottom of 11691.

Stop at 12164 remains untouched

Dow Jones (12302)
In the previous review (12609), we had stated, “intermediate trend is bullish, stop 12164. Once the Dow clears the strong resistance of 12815-841, expect a good rally may be up to 13225; however the rise will not be fast but slow and steady amid with corrections in between”. Since last review, the Dow has corrected with more than 300 points fall. However, it is still above our stop of 12164. Despite of a strong negative sentiments, it has manage to trade well above 11500 (Jan low) for the last 2 and half months. We expect the Dow to move in a sideways faze, unless and until there is a close above 12841. Till such time, it will continue to move 4 days up & 3 days down, creating confused environment. However, once it closes below 12164, the things will became much more difficult for the bulls to come back and control the show. Before that, a close below 12280 will be the first indication of weakness.

Uptrend!

Dow Jones (12609) : Intermediate trend : Bullish
In the last review (12216) we said “In spite of straight 4 loosing trading sessions, the extremely near term picture, above 12077-11951, remains bullish; a close below this, will open the fresh bearish move, may be to the “last resort” level of 11500; On the upside 12815-12841 remains a challenging area for the bulls.” The Dow indeed remained firm, and snapped the 4 days loosing streak with a gains of almost 400 points, since our last review. In the process, the intermediate trend has also turned positive, Stop at 12164. On the upside, once the resistance area of 12815-12841 is taken, the bulls will attempt to climb further, may be upto 13225. However, the rise will not fast and furious but slow and steady, with ongoing corrections lasting for 1-2 days.

Wounded Bulls are in retaliation mode…

Major Indices: Sensex : 15757 Nifty : 4761 Intermediate Trend: Sideways Key Technical Levels: 16452- on the upside; 15300- on the downside In the previous review when the Sensex was at 15644, we had stated, “downside is restricted up to 14677-14500. “Smart money” is active on the buy side and Shake out process (towards recovery) is on; Long term investors should buy around 25-30% of equity on every dip”. As expected, literally, the Sensex has shaken out the investor’s confidence with wide swings. It has surpassed our initial target of 16111 (actual 16236); equally failed to close above 16111 and then tumbled to 15300(slightly down from our “key” level of 15350). Despite of strong adverse sentiments, negative hype by media, confusing “statements” by major players, the Sensex seldom tested its previous low of 14677. Even though the sentiments were favorable (for bears), the bears had failed to push the markets towards a new low. That itself is the first indication that the bulls are fighting and actively protecting their turf. The clear trend is likely to emerge, after the completion of this shakeout process. Odds are in the favor of the bulls (80%). Expect a fierce battle in 15300-16450 area, before shifting of the control, decisively. Anything below 15300 will weaken the bull’s fire power (read short term stop). However it’s unlikely to happen, given the circumstances (described in our last few reports since Sensex touched 14677). Further, the bullish counter attack will not gather required strength, if the Sensex failed to surpass 16452 in the next 5-7 trading sessions. Once done, the bears will get slaughtered. Conclusion: Intermediate trend will turn bullish, once 16452 surpassed on closing basis. In the extreme short term, again, expect 15300-50 to act as a (last) support, if holds then first target for the bulls is to close above 16452 & then 17020. Even if the bulls manage to close this week above 15950, its better.
Rate of Inflation Vs Sensex
Last week, there was a hue and cry after the figures of rate of inflation was revealed. The media and analysts were active in predicting its impact on the markets and on (poor) Sensex, which already has shed around 30% of its value since Jan 08, for various reasons. Has high rate of inflation is really a worrying factors for the bulls?? Study of the movements in rate of inflation vis-à-vis Sensex, since the start of Bull run in 2003, reveals some stunning results. Look at the following chart:- Whenever, rate of inflation is at its peak, the Sensex, invariably, & notoriously, makes a “trough” rather than ‘top”. At least for the last 5 odd years, a spike in rate of inflation is giving stimulations for the fresh up move. Will it be different this time, when we are already down 30%?? If not, please don’t shoot me.

Dow and Gold

Dow Jones (12216) : Intermediate trend : Sideways
In our last review we did mention “The Dow has strengthened the short term position and expect a rise up to 12815-41 with a firm support placed at 12077-11951 area”. The Dow touched a high 12687, as against 12815, and slipped with loss of 4 consecutive trading sessions, tested a low of 12164(support 12077). In spite of these 4 loosing trading sessions, the extremely near term picture remains bullish, above 12077-11951. Only a close below this, will open the fresh bearish move, may be once again targeting the recent low of Jan 08 (11500) which is also the “last resort” for the bulls. On the upside 12815-12841 remains a challenging area for the bulls. From the macro level, the world over, the debate is continuing about the “fate” of Dow. There is a big fight between doomsayers and optimists. Logically, (if) in case of recession in US, the Dow should crash to sub 10k levels or even below that. However, there is another concept of “relative” performance of the Dow vis-a-vis other Economies/asset classes. Look at the comparison between Gold prices and Dow since 2000. The gold prices moved from 100 (base) to 350 in the last 7 years, while the Dow is (still) languishing near the base line. In short the Dow is trading that of Dec 99 prices of gold. While at the same time “emerging markets” have outperformed the gold in the given time zone. Has the “slowdown/recession” in US already been discounted in price? If so, then the Dow may not witness vertical fall, but may remain lackluster in a broader trading ranges, for the near term.

“Shakeout” is on…Advantage Investors…

Major Indices :: Sensex : 15644, Nifty : 4942 Intermediate Trend :: Sideways Key Technical Levels :: 16111- on the upside, 15350- on the downside In our last review, when the Sensex was at 15289, we had stated, “Prima facie, the downside is restricted. The bulls will have their “say” only when the falling channel (see chart) is broken on the upside. If surpassed, the next target will be 15873-16064”. As expected, the Sensex decisively broken the falling channel and flared up to 16452, over and above our targeted area. For the last 2 weeks, after the Sensex created a recent low of 14677, we have been vouching for the selective buying (25-30%) in frontline stocks, on every fall/sharp intraday cuts. We will continue to do the same, in future also, with protecting longs near 14500-14600 levels (intermediate stop). As far as extremely short term trend is concerned, the equations are still favoring the bulls, provided the Sensex holds itself above 15350-15465- short term stop (gap up opening area). From medium to long term perspective, the downside seems to be protected near the recent low of 14677-14500. The recent run up of almost 12% in the Sensex indicates the “Smart money” is active on the buy side. Typically, these “strong hands” create a sharp volatility and nerve wracking environment, to “accumulate” the stocks at reasonable levels and push away the “weaker hands” out of the market. Yesterday’s fall of over 4% was an ideal example of this “shakeout” process. One can survive and digest these sharp swings, only if one is having broader horizon of investment. Traders can wait, till the situation becomes less risky. Conclusion: Intermediate trend is yet to confirm bullishness; downside is restricted up to 14677-14500. In the extreme short term, expect 15350 to act as a support, if holds then first challenge for the bulls is to close above 16111 & then 16683.
